Before becoming a Christian, Lincoln Brewster worried a lot. One day he picked up a Bible and read the verse…Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? (Matt 6:27)

In order to stop worrying, we need to change some things about ourselves. We need to pray more, worship fully, completely trust and rely on Him. We need to open our hearts and develop a relationship with Christ. So when we worry, we need to pray for God to remove the worry from our lives!

We also need to search the scriptures. Recently, I have been in a group at SWC studying Revelation. The words in Revelation 19:6-8 have hit me and stuck with me! They say, “Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)

“Let us rejoice and be glad” means a lot more than the type of glad you normally think glad to mean. It means a lot more than just…hey, I’m glad to see you. It is the glad that is accompanied by complete and utter delightfulness and joyfulness, dancing, shouting and praising Him!

As I was searching the scriptures about “Let us rejoice and be glad,” I came across Isaiah 25:8-9 which states “he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The LORD has spoken. In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.” This is just one of the many prophesies in Isaiah about Christ!

Bear in mind, Isaiah lived 2,700 years ago. That’s about 700 years before Christ! Click on the following prophesies of Isaiah to see the scriptures where he predicted with amazing accuracy:

the virgin birth of Christ;

A Son will be called God;

Jesus will perform miracles;

Christ will be preceded by a messenger;

Christ will be spat upon and beaten;

Christ will be rejected;

Christ will die for our sins;.

Christ will be silent before his accusers;.

and he will be buried in a rich man’s tomb.

I think Isaiah nailed it! He also invites all to come, who are thirsty and describes the New Heavens and a new Earth. See how this compares to Revelation 22:17 and Revelation 21! Can you imagine a place where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Let us rejoice and be glad Amen!!!

Jesus himself in the most powerful sermon ever Matt 5:1-12, where he gives us the Beatitudes, says “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

My prayer for the New Year is that I will stop worrying and be more joyful and glad in his presence and that I can open my heart fully to the God who created me and filled me with living water, so that one day I will be with Him in heaven! I also pray that you will join me!

What is Celebrate Recovery?

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12-step program based on the eight principles in the beatitudes to help us with our hurts, habits, and hang-ups. A hurt, habit, or hang-up is something that hinders our walk with God. All of us can benefit from this program.

These life problems can be stumbling blocks or stepping stones. Healing is available through applying the principles of a Bible-based recovery process to our lives.

God is moving, stick around the miracle awaits!!!

Joy

As Jesus Christ our Messiah and King came into the world in a lowly manger, the angels announced the good news that a Savior has been born. This video illustration to proclaims the Joy that Christ brings during the Christmas season or any time of the year. May this video help us rediscover the joy of the miraculous virgin birth and the prophecy fulfilled in scripture.

Periods of sadness and even depression can enter the lives of even the most devout Christians. Job wished he died at birth (Job 3:11). David wanted to wander far away from reality (Psalm 55:6-8). Elijah fled into the desert and asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:3-5).

So how can we overcome our times of joylessness? We can follow the lead of these same people. Job said that, if we pray, God will restore us to joy and righteousness (Job 33:26). David realized that study and knowing the Bible can bring us joy (Psalm 19:8). He also realized that we need to praise God even in the midst of despair (Psalm 42:5). In Elijah's case, God let him rest for a time and then sent Elisha to help him (1 Kings 19:19-21).

We also need friends that we can share our hurts, hang-ups and habits with (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). It is so helpful to share our troubles and feelings with fellow Christians. We may be surprised to find that they are struggling with same things we do. So join us on Thursday evenings at Celebrate Recovery to start dealing with things that you are hanging onto from the past! I have seen so many changed lives in this program! I have also witnessed the joy the Lord brings to the people of these changed lives!

Let’s compare joy to happiness. One place happiness can be found in the Bible is in Deuteronomy 24:5, which says “If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.” Here happiness can be compared to eros love. As I discussed in last week’s posting, the weakness of eros love is that it is based more on self-benefit, rather than self-sacrifice. Eros love benefits you rather than the other person or God. I believe the same is true of happiness. Happiness is fleeting since it usually depends on things outside of us for our self-benefit.

Joy, on the other hand, is being truly content which comes from internal factors like our faith in the Lord. True joy is everlasting and not dependent upon circumstances. It is based on our relationship with Jesus Christ, which is itself an everlasting source of joy.

Joy comes from knowing God promises Heaven, and the hope (guarantee) of eternal life, when you trust that Jesus paid the death penalty for sin in your place.

Joy comes from the peace of having God dwelling in us. We need to clear our hearts and minds of all the junk in our lives to make room for Him to dwell within us. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

Joy comes from love, which is knowing and obeying God's Commands. As this is practiced, love grows from knowing and obeying, to being based upon our decisions to give of ourselves expecting no self-benefit. As we make such decisions to give, honest and true feelings of love will develop.

One of my favorite passages is Nehemiah 8:10, which states, “This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” This was the secret of Nehemiah’s success! At 446 B.C., Nehemiah prayed without ceasing, and then he acted on his prayer. He not only restored the fallen Jerusalem, but the people's obedience to God. After completing most of his mission, he went back to Persia, but had to return to Jerusalem restore the Law of God after the people went back to their defiant ways, including defiling the Sabbath and idolatry - the very same reasons that caused the destruction of the city in the first place.

Paul experienced true joy. Writing from prison after being severely beaten and chained, Paul encouraged the believers of Philippi with a letter whose theme is “Rejoice." He shows that joy is something you choose to have in spite of your circumstances. He is celebrating! Even though he was out of action, many other people have stepped up and are spreading the Word (Philippians 1:12). Paul states in Philippians 4:4-7, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In order to have true joy in your life, a relationship with Jesus must be the most important thing in your life. You develop this relationship by worshiping Him, praying to Him, reading and studying His Word, trusting Him, obeying Him and serving Him. Secondly, to have joy in your life you must follow the “Great Commandment.” You must place the needs of others before yourself.

Love

Jesus is the true Shepherd who searches out and finds his sheep among the scattered flock. His sheep know him, and they follow his voice. This video illustration demonstrates that our Savior is our Shepherd of Love during the Christmas season or any time of the year. Jesus Christ died on the cross and his substitutionary death brings the abundance of life to mankind.

Much has been spoken and written about love. The Greek word agape is often translated as love in the New Testament. Agape love is different from other types of love. Agape is the highest type of love and is unconditional. The essence of agape love is self-sacrifice. Agape is not used in the Bible to refer to romantic or sexual love, for which the Greek word eros is used. Nor does it refer to close friendship or brotherly love, for which the Greek word philia is used. Agape love is unique and is distinguished by its nature and character.

Although I am focusing on agape love, this is not to degrade eros as sinful or impure. Romantic or sexual love is a gift of God to married couples to express their mutual love, strengthen their marital bond, and ensure the continued existence of humanity. The Song of Solomon is a whole book of the Bible that expresses the blessing of eros love. The thrill of eros love will wear off quickly without some phileo and agapao to go along with it. The weak point of eros love is understandable. Eros love is based more on self-benefit, rather than self-sacrifice. Eros love benefits you rather than the other person or God.

Agape is love which is of and from God, whose very nature is love itself. The best statement about love is the Great Commandment.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV)

All of The Ten Commandments are summarized in the Great Commandment. Love the Lord your God by 1. Not worshiping any other gods; 2. Not making any idols; 3. Not misusing the name of God; and 4. Keeping the Sabbath holy. Love your neighbor by 5. Honoring your father & mother; 6. Not murdering; 7. Not committing adultery; 8. Not stealing; 9. Not lying; and 10. Not coveting.

John summarizes agape love in the following Bible Verses:

“If you love me, keep my commands” John 14:15 (NIV) and

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to His commands. 2 John 1:6 (NIV)

Therefore, the most basic definition of love from the standpoint of God Himself involves knowing and keeping His commandments. We cannot love God with all our heart, mind, and soul until we know Him, know His commands and begin walking in obedience to his commands.

God provides very detailed definition of the boundaries and parameters of our love in 1 Corinthians 13.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

First of all, Love is a knowing and obeying God's Commands. As this is practiced, love grows from knowing and obeying, to being based upon our decisions to give of ourselves expecting no self-benefit. As we make such decisions to give, honest and true feelings of love will develop. Loving God is developing a personal relationship with Him by worshiping Him, praying to Him, reading His Word, trusting Him, obeying Him and serving Him. Unfortunately, our concepts of love have been clouded by a recent trend of “seeker-sensitive” churches and “feel-good” Christianity. Let us learn, remember and embrace the Lord's own definitions and truly LOVE!

The greatest expression of God's love is communicated to us in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Peace

Though the town of Bethlehem was small in size, out of it would come the Ruler who would reign as King of Kings and redeem us from our sin. This video reflects the Peace that Christ our Lord brings this Christmas season or any time of the year. It shows the miracle of the virgin birth that gave us the Messiah Jesus. His death on the cross has brought peace and reconciliation to mankind.

Peace is prevalent in the Bible. Some of my favorite verses are:

The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace. Psalm 29:11 NIV

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1, 8

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:2, 6, 7

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7

Do not be anxious about anything…really?! I struggle with this often! We all want peace of mind and no worries. We want to enjoy life and everything it has to offer. However, sometimes we can't find peace of mind. We become depressed. We often get angry and lash out at God or those near to us.

Today we try to buy peace. We try to negotiate peace. Sometimes we try to force peace. Doctors try to prescribe peace and lawmakers try to legislate peace. Some people even try to manipulate peace.

Why can’t we find peace? Where do we start? What do we do? Well, the best place to start is with God. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” --Colossians 3:15. Jesus not only gives you salvation and heaven, but also gives you peace before you get there.

Ultimately it’s about God dwelling in us. We need to clear our hearts and minds of any continual sin, unforgiveness, anger, and any other barriers to make room for Him to dwell within us. He wants us to be holy, pure, and righteous—“For the kingdom of God is… righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit”--Romans 14:17. You can expect peace and joy to become a part of your daily life when you are a Christian - but just like all the other benefits of the kingdom of God, these attributes come at a price.

In some ways, it is easier to be in the world, but “Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” -- Luke 9:62. We can't look back. We must proceed in our walk with Christ - we must learn to hear His voice and obey His commands. Only then will we feel and experience His joy and peace.

Will you trust Him and not worry?

Will you pray about everything in your life?

Will you read and meditate on the Word of God?

And finally, will you do, what God calls you to do?

Hope

For 400 years, Israel had waited and hoped for the promised Messiah. The prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in that a virgin would bear a son and His name would be called, Emmanuel, “God with us.” This powerful and moving video illustration will help you recount the journey of Mary as she discovers her role in humanity with the miracle of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.

Hope is so prevalent throughout His Word. Some of my favorite bible verses about hope are:

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Psalm
119:114-116 NIV

For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Romans 8:24-25 NIV

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 NIV

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 NIV

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love… 1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15 NIV
Man has misconstrued or misinterpreted many words in the Bible. Let’s take a look at the wonderful and exhilarating word “Hope” and see if we can grasp its meaning!

One may say, “I hope we get lots of snow this winter,” “I hope the Philadelphia Eagles win this weekend,” or “I hope my children will behave.”

The standard dictionary definition and one that is generally accepted by most of the world is to FEEL that something desired MAY happen. The world’s definition is very vague and uncertain.

Lets take a look at the Biblical definitions of Hope.

The Greek word “Yachal” in the Old Testament is translated as “Hope.” “Yachal” is defined as to wait for, to hope for and to trust!

The Greek word “Elpis” in the New Testament is also translated as “Hope.” “Elpis” is defined in the Christian sense as a joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation on hope, in hope, having hope the author of hope, or he who is its foundation the thing hoped for!

You can know God promises Heaven, the Hope (guarantee) of eternal life is when you trust that Jesus paid the death penalty for sin in your place. He promises — and all you need do is to trust Jesus as your Savior. Believe His Word — He died for you.

Remembering Mom's Love

Mom’s passing has been one of the most difficult events in my life. Anita and I want to thank everyone for the love, support and prayers during these past few weeks and those who celebrated mom’s life with us on Saturday, October 22 at her memorial service. We definitely experienced God’s presence, love, peace and joy during the celebration of life service! The following video was created by my niece in Arizona and played in both the Arizona and Pennsylvania celebration of life services. Below the video is my memories shared during the celebration here in Allentown.

Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to Nate Fluck and his family, since his mom has also passed away recently.

Thank you all for your love, support and prayers during the last few weeks since mom passed away and for joining us today as we celebrate her life. Mom, you were a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and servant of Christ. So much of whom I am today is a result of my upbringing by you and dad. I may have stumbled many times throughout my life, but I’m sure you know that the seed you and dad planted in me as a child by taking me to church is bearing much fruit today in my life.

An important part of being a Christian is confessing. As I said before, I stumbled. Two of my life verses are as James 5:16 states, “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed,” and 1 John 1:9 states, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

So mom, here are the top 10 confessions of your sons- Jeff, Greg and myself:

10. Greg broke the candy dish!

9. I burnt the popcorn in your sauce pan and hid it in the shanty! I guess woman’s intuition is why my lovely wife Anita doesn’t let me too close to the kitchen!

8. You know all of your large cooking pots that have disappeared…no wait…that wasn’t us…dad used them to catch the oil draining from the cars!

7. I think it was Jeff who threw the baseball that smashed through the bay window, when papa thought the television exploded!

6. Jeff and I also broke candy dishes! I don’t believe you ever knew who broke what when it happened. Us boys could stick together most of the time…a vow of silence!

5. It was Greg’s idea to bring the garden hose in the house during a water battle…no wait…he was the one who called you at work! Even a dehumidifier could not have possibly dried the house any better than us kids after that telephone call.

4. I don’t remember if it was Jeff or me who lit the fuse on the firecrackers which were put in the coffee can and placed in Greg’s bedroom, but it definitely was an effective alarm clock! That was probably shortly after he ratted us out about the garden hose!

3. The three of us cleared out the dining room and had many roller derbies on the hardwood floors! I’m sure these were the source of some of Greg’s injuries!

2. Greg learned things way before his time…it was sink or swim in so many ways…he learned to ride a bike by having him hang onto the apple tree….inserting the bike under him…having him let go…..and push! Go…go…go!

1. If it wasn’t broke, we took it apart anyway!

We had a great childhood. You and dad made sure we attended worship and Sunday school to learn about God & Jesus! You served as the children’s choir director in which us boys sang. I’m not quite sure how you were able to handle 20 children all singing in a different key, but I’m sure you loved it! I know us boys didn’t appreciate wearing those dresses...I mean choir gowns! You taught us so much in Cub Scouts, when you were Den Leader Coach and later by taking us to boy scouts at church, and so many trips to Camp Trexler. You took us everywhere in “mom’s taxi.” I remember how we all got excited when we headed to Asbury Park, NJ for the day! We traveled as a family to see Uncle Willard perform in the Broadway Buckaroos! It was so cool when you filled our living room with music!

You and dad always instilled the importance of family in our lives! I remember many times visiting nana and papa in West Catasauqua and then in Florida. It was fun spending time in Maryland with Uncle Ron and Aunt Joan, and Uncle Doug and Aunt Helen. Uncle Ron has been a great mentor to me through the years! He and Aunt Joan opened their home to us boys so many times for extended visits. We had a blast when Uncle Doug took us tobogganing. Of course we managed to lose Greg off the back, half way down the hill, or positioned him just right to catch the snow spray so that he looked like a snowman at the bottom of the hill!

As a grandmother, you spent so much time with your grandkids. You were like a mother to them in so many ways! It was awesome when you watched them on Saturday evenings when we went out bowling with family & friends. You watched Lori and Eric for years when Jeff went to work. You picked up my children to take them to celebration group at church, where you gave so much of yourself! I remember you having a real challenge finding Kyle sometimes! Both your grandkids and great-grandkids enjoyed the family gatherings and swimming at your home. I’m not sure how they felt when the pool wall collapsed and the were almost swimming in the river on Front Street… a bit scared at the time, but laughing about it later!

Anita and I enjoyed our trips with you and dad, especially the vacations in Florida, & trips to Indiana & Arizona. You sure knew how to overstuff a suitcase! We also enjoyed going to Sight & Sound Theater in Lancaster with both of you. Anita tells me that she is grateful to our Lord and always felt blessed to have you in her life as her mom-in-law!

As Jesus said to his disciples in John 13:14, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” Mom, you definitely understood that Jesus did not come to earth to be served, but to serve others.

You shared your musical talents for over 50 years as a pianist, choir director, bell choir director, soloist, and organist at Salem United Church of Christ in Catasauqua. You were a deacon, elder and the first woman president of the consistory board of Salem UCC. You served passionately at Phoebe Home as a volunteer, pianist, and auxiliary president for many years. You volunteered many years at the Thrift Shop in Catty. You and dad worked tirelessly delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors in desperate need of nutritious meals and human contact, including your love and prayers. I’m sure it took you four hours to deliver the meals, when you could have finished in two, because of the time you spent to become their friend, sharing life with them and telling them about your family.

As I said before, I stumbled many times in my life. I’m living proof that “the soul of a man, unwatched, is perverse” as Donald Miller wrote in his book “Blue Like Jazz”. I was so self-addicted. My house wasn’t big enough, my car wasn’t nice enough, and my wife wasn’t good enough. Thankfully, you and dad taught me and planted the necessary seeds. Like the prodigal son, I was able to come out of the darkness and into the light. God broke the chains that bound me! All I needed to do was ask. I am no longer self-absorbed. Like you mom, I now serve passionately and am experiencing love, joy and the peace that surpasses all understanding. Like you mom, I want to be the hands and feet of Christ. You were truly a good and faithful servant!

We did not lose mom! You cannot lose someone if you know where they are at. You are now singing praises to Him in heaven as you did here on earth! You are in a place where there are no more sorrows, no more pain, no more fear and no more storms. I pray that we all meet you again for Jesus says, in John 14:2, “In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” I will always love you mom; and I will miss you so very much until we meet again one day.

The PK Men’s Classic is held in an all-male environment that creates a safe atmosphere where men are comfortable enough to confront the challenges they face in their homes, workplaces, and in their private lives.

Statistics show that men are struggling spiritually more than they ever have. The divorce rate among Christians and non-Christians is almost the same. Pornography continues to cripple the spiritual walk of men at alarming levels. Very few men understand how to lead their families to spiritual maturity through hearing and obeying the Word of God.

The revived and energized Promise Keepers Classic calls men into a passionate, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It challenges them to win the spiritual battles they encounter every day by reading, studying and obeying God’s Word. It inspires men to recapture the mantle of being the spiritual leader in their home. Dear Friends,

I am so grateful to belong to a church full of faithful followers of Christ. As a church, we share Christ’s love in both our Local and Global communities. 2010 has been a year of many challenges, but God is clearly with us! I am so excited at how God has met us right where we are, and we’ve seen His faithful hand at work in us. This has been a tough year in so many ways. Our local economy continues to be less than optimal. We’ve assisted so many people with their financial and physical needs. We’ve helped many people with spiritual and emotional difficulties. We’ve reached out in even more ways to people who are hurting and broken.

As we end 2010 and think about giving financially, will you give some time to pray and ask God to reveal the following to you:

1) Dear God, remind me of the ways you’ve blessed me in 2010.

2) God, please show me how You have used SWC to be part of my spiritual growth.

3) Let me know how much You want me to give to show my gratitude to You and help my church now and in the coming year.

Many of us are not able to give more than we already do. But, at the same time others can give more. So, please give as freely as God guides. Remember all of SWC’s resources come from people like you. I am so grateful to be part of such a generous church.

I know us accountants sometimes get a bad rap, and you should not give to get something back, but if you itemize your deductions when preparing your income tax return, the amounts that you give are tax deductible, so I encourage you to give those special charitable gifts not only to our church, but other charities that you support before the end of the year.

God did not give up on me! He saved me from myself! He led me to this wonderful church where I truly found Him! I have accumulated many chains and rocks over the years which were hanging on me and weighing me down. God removed the self-centeredness, greed and materialism in me. He lessened the fear, resentments, pride, lust, procrastination, gluttony and impatience in me. I could not have possible done this on my own. I had tried for 45 years and failed miserably.

Paul’s Life for Christ

20 For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. 21 For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. 22 But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. 23 I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.

On Sunday, a dear friend has gone to be with Christ. When I think of Dave, I see a man whose life will bring honor to Christ, a man who is bold for Christ! Dave’s life is a true blessing for many of us. Dave introduced many to Christ, even though his illness. He shows us how his strong faith overcomes everything. I pray my faith can be like his.

Just being with Dave has made me a better man. I met him on the softball field, where he always encouraged us to play the game as Jesus would! Serving with him as a leader in the church gave me a clear picture of his faith and desire to give and serve Christ.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy to Sue, Brian, Jessica, Jen, Nate, Kayla, Kellie, Ethan, and the entire Hoitsma family. We hope and pray that your wonderful memories of him will bring you comfort and peace at this difficult time. We are thinking of you and praying for you every day.

As I reflect on Pastor Lenny’s message on Palm Sunday, I find myself falling so short of what Christ offers me.

Prior to joining SWC, when things are going relatively well in my life, I tended to keep Christ at a far distance. During difficult times, I still tried to rely on myself, which was a disaster in so many ways. If I treated Anita like I treated God, I’d be in deep trouble! He was not much more than a mere acquaintance. I did not begin to understand the significance of this amazing love, mercy and grace.

Since joining SWC, I am now focusing on what I need, rather than what I want. Although I fall short from time to time, Jesus is close by to turn me back to Him. By developing an intimate relationship with Jesus, I now understand what an amazing gift he has given me on the cross. The significance of His victory on Easter is so much more than I deserve, far beyond my expectations.

An important part of Men’s Ministries is examining ourselves and our commitment to Christ. Much of this needs to be done at a personal level.

We all need to pray and fast on a daily basis. Before you think I’m crazy and stop reading this, I am not suggesting we all need to starve ourselves or become malnourished. You may want to fast for one meal a week. If skipping a meal is not medically advisable, a spirit of fasting can include a restriction on luxuries in your life, such as doing without certain foods or drinks, watching television, shopping or going out to dinner. The purpose of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world and instead focus on Christ. We must constantly confess and repent from all sins.

Fasting should be not only removing something from our lives, but replacing it with something that is pleasing to God. I suggest we examine ourselves, fast from something significant in our lives, and replace it with daily prayer, bible study and service to others that honors Christ.

Remember guys...the greatest marriage advice anyone can give you is to pray together! Have you prayed together as a couple today and every day?!

Serving Christ by Serving Others

Authentic Men is a Men’s Ministry outreach that provides assistance for the elderly, single moms and anyone needing a helping hand with small projects around the home or with other assistance (e.g. yard work, rearranging furniture or moving heavy items, small repairs, a ride to church, etc).

If you would like to request assistance or have questions, send an Email with your Name, Address, Phone Number and a brief description of how we can help you to authenticmen@mail.com.

If you want to volunteer your services for this program, you will receive email notifications with Opportunities to serve. When you respond, you will be taking ownership of the request and will notify the coordinator via Email to authenticmen@mail.com when the task is complete.
You may sign up by sending an Email to the above link with your name, phone number and an indication that you are volunteering your services to the Authentic Men program.

You may select from the various phrases and Scripture verses provided. These will be translated in the appropriate language. We also encourage you to write a few simple lines in English. The prisoner or one of his or her cellmates may be able to understand it. When writing additional lines, please do not state anything negative about their government.

Men’s Breakfast:
On Saturday, November 8th, at 8:00 am, the men of SWC will be sharing breakfast and fellowship with our guests from Family Promise.

If you are able to help prepare the breakfast at 7:00 am or clean up afterwards, please contact Brad Hockman at 424-7068.

On Sunday, November 9th, a few men are also needed to prepare breakfast for our Family Promise guests and clean up at 7:00 am.

Work Day:
Following the breakfast on November 8th, Help us do some work around our church starting at 9:00 am.

The Shepherd and His Flock

Here in John 10, Jesus begins his attach on the wicked shepherds, “the thieves and robbers”, the Pharisees, who were attacking Him at every opportunity.

Although the Pharisees were highly educated, they did not know God. They didn’t recognize his voice. God called himself the Shepherd of Israel many times in the Old Testament. By calling himself “the Good Shepherd”, Jesus is stating that He is God. In verse 16, He indicates that He is everyone’s God, not just the Jews. The Jews were divided. Many thought he was demon-possessed and raving mad. Verse 21 concludes “But others said, "These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

This passage strikes me with the deepest shame, because I spent so much of my life not knowing the voice of our Shepherd. There is nothing more important than knowing God. Jesus alone offers us the abundant life. Not Satan and his lies. Do you know His voice?

I have struggled with many of Satan’s lies…greed, materialism, lust, envy, pride, unforgiveness, anger, and impatience. Satan deceives us into thinking that Christian life is a life of denial, where we miss the “good things of life.” I have been praying for God to remove this scum from my life for quite a while now and it works! Remember to pray, pray and pray some more! Do you have the best thing in life, which is a personal relationship with Christ?

This passage reminds me of the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want …” Is Jesus your Good Shepherd? Jesus states in John 10:9, ”I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.” Is he your way to Salvation? He certainly is mine!

God deals with us, His church, as a flock of sheep. Being vitally involved with a flock at SWC, especially small groups, has impacted me in so many ways. I have developed honest, open relationships with fellow believers that compare to none. I openly confess my shortcomings with my prayer and accountability partners in The Celebrate Recovery program. If I miss Sunday worship at SWC, my entire week is out of balance. Do you worship every Sunday? Are you connected with a flock?

We live in a very individualistic age, so be careful…it’s not about you. We need to minister to each other. When we purchase an item that needs to be assembled, a certain gender doesn't "need" instructions Guys, get over it! You don’t know it all! Read and study the Bible…you need life’s instructions. The answers you seek are probably already answered. If you can’t find the answer, ask someone for help. Don’t stay lost on the freeway of life! I have read the Bible almost every day since joining SWC, attended many Bible Studies and have found so many answers to life’s challenging questions.

Remember, the Lord’s sheep are His sheep, not ours. We must keep our own selfish needs in check. At best, we are undershepherds. Since joining SWC, I have tried to give special care and attention to those in need. I have reached out to many in Celebrate Recovery and have been ministered to. I assist and mentor others in various community programs. I was totally changed by the Mission trip to Brazil. Are you reaching those in need? I am finally walking in victory!

Starting the 60-60 Experiment:

For the next 60 days, try to stay in a continuous, honest conversation with God, willing to do his will moment by moment. Set a watch or alarm to beep every 60 minutes, and put up sticky notes & reminders around you home, car & office, as a reminder to stay connected.

Try to turn your thoughts back to God all throughout the day, as often as you can. This simple conscious contact with God isn't easy, but it's all you have to do - everything else will begin to fall into place over time.

Even if you're not yet convinced this is true, try it. Every 60 minutes, stop and recall "God is with me right now..." and let that propel you to ask God "Show me your will this next moment. I want to be willing to do your will as an act of love toward you."

Begin the experiment and see if this isn't the path to a far more satisfying life.

On August 2nd, the men of SWC enjoyed sharing breakfast and fellowship with the people in the Family Promise program. Thank you Pete, Rob, Todd and all who have helped and shared in this day and the Sunday breakfast as well.

Thank you, Bob for organizing the Men's Breakfast followed by the Spring clean up around the Church on April 19th. I thank all of the men for their hard work; Patrick for his brief devotional; Derrick for his closing prayer; and Dave for keeping the breakfast light.

Thank you Patrick Eby for leading the devotional at the breakfast on March 8th. The topic was accountability and he suggested we all need an accountability partner or team to share our issues with on a weekly basis. It was further discussed that the Celebrate Recovery program provides an excellent place to share your struggles with an accountability group. Thank you Dave Fernald for your leadership for this event.

We thank all of you who made the Men’s Breakfast and Church Clean Up Day on November 3rd a very successful event. If you know of any projects needed to be done around the church, please contact one of the trustees (Mike Crosby, Dave Hoitsma, Bob Cool, Brad Hockman or Becky Thornton.)

Our Men's Breakfast on September 29, 2007 was well attended. Over a dozen men gathered from a diverse group of ages. We thank you for your commitment to the men's ministries program! Also, we thank Dave Fernald for the excellent meal and leadership of the event. Special thanks to our special guest, Frank Major, for leading the devotional. Frank is a missionary from Bosnia visiting SWC for the weekend.

We are planning on having breakfasts every other month.

Men’s Adventure Challenge

The men of SWC will meet at Spruce Lake at 9 am on September 20th for some Adventure Activities. In these stimulating team builders, we must work together to find creative solutions to overcome various obstacles. Insights gained can lead to positive team growth and develop our personal ability to communicate and cooperate in work, church, school and home settings.

Upon arrival, we will proceed to The Challenge Course, which involves two or three challenge initiatives followed by 2 or 3 more challenging elements. We will discuss the challenges presented. Communication, leadership, cooperation, patience, goal setting, analysis and planning, are some of the team qualities addressed.

After lunch, which will be provided, we will be further challenged by the Vertical Playpen, which is creative climbing element where two people work together to climb over net, beam, tire, and rope to reach a platform suspended over 30 feet off the ground. The element is designed to challenge people over a wide variety of ability levels and teaches mutual dependence, perseverance and the power of encouragement.

The cost is $20. Sign up at the Information Center. Make checks payable to “Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church.” Indicate “Men’s Adventure Challenge” on the memo line of your check.

Men and boys...Join us on a trip to Wilkes-Barre for an Arena Football Game on 7/19/08 at 7:30 PM - Pioneers vs. Mahoning Valley Thunder. We will carpool from the church at 6:00 pm. We reserved our own section of the arena. The cost is $13 per person and includes a hot dog, popcorn and a soda. Sign up and pay at the welcome center in the church.

Where’s the pastor?

Praise and thanks to God! Thank you, SWC! I was so pleased with the fact that we had given Pastor Lenny the proper level of communication and prayer during his sabbatical to study and travel with the Asbury Beeson Pastor Program. It is so wonderful to have him and his family back.

Before worship this Sunday, Anita and I were reading the bible passages in the One Year Bible and she pointed out such a timely message to me in the One Year Bible Blog. Acts 6:2 states, “We apostles should spend our time preaching and teaching the word of God, not administering a food program." Today posting includes this quote, “I think sometimes we might get a bit grouchy if we don't see our pastors or ministers at every single church function or event - but we have to realize they are not called to do every single thing that we, the body of the church, are called to. One of their primary roles is to preach and teach the word of God. So, they may need us to volunteer at or administer a food program while they are doing what they are called to.”

I know we all love being around our pastors, which is awesome, but lets continue to give them the space they need to preach and teach; and step up with our gifts of ministry and serve this amazing God we love. Otherwise, they might get in the way…only kidding!

Looking Back

During my second year as Men's Ministry Director, many things were the same, but many things have changed. I have gotten to know many of the men much better, and am amazed at the responsiveness to the ministry and the spiritual growth of many men, including myself. I thank all of you for your prayers and encouragement.

We developed the following Mission Statement to guide us in leading the ministry:

Our mission is to encourage every man to love God above all else by developing a personal relationship with Christ, to be accomplished by following Christ’s example in our time of worship, fellowship, daily work and in all personal contacts through words and actions.

All men must be equipped with God’s Word to engage daily in Bible study and prayer, so that we may be energized by the Holy Spirit to be leaders and servants of Christ within our families, church, communities and the world.

During the planning meeting last fall we discussed the following:

As Christian men, are we committed to making a difference in our--families--church --community --world? Our goal is to make a difference. We defined our goals as

1. Developing our personal relationship with Christ

2. Daily prayer time

3. Daily Bible reading

4. Attending Church regularly

5. Attending growth groups

6. Attending Men’s Ministry events

7. Education (Rounding the Bases)

8. Serve

If you review the above goals, Men’s Ministry is much more than just attending Men’s Ministry events. Prayer and accountability was discussed at length. All men are encouraged to find a prayer and accountability partner. Celebrate Recovery provides an awesome opportunity to find not only a prayer and accountability partner, but a whole team. The Celebrate Recovery program has enabled me to discuss my past and free myself from it by giving it to Jesus. I have been praying the following for some time now and ask you to please join me in praying that Jesus will wash away all the sinful crud in my life and tendencies toward evil, and replace them with a hunger and thirst for His righteousness.

We discussed the need for a men's bible study, but finding a convenient time was difficult. I suggest we all get involved with one of the existing growth groups, and at some time, develop a men’s group in the future.

It was also discussed that communications needed to be improved. I believe we solved this for the most part by making the appropriate announcements in the bulletins and newsletters, sending multiple emails and developing a ministry website (swcmen.blogspot.com). If you visit the website, you will see in much greater detail the activities of the Men’s Ministry program.

An important part of Men’s Ministry is examining ourselves and our commitment to Christ. Much of this needs to be done at a personal level. We all need to pray, fast and read the bible on a daily basis. We need to serve on a consistent basis.

Looking Ahead

If you haven’t done so already, you need to develop a personal relationship with Christ. I have been praying consistently for this ministry and believe God is answering many of these prayers. Although we faced many challenges this past year, I have seen amazing spiritual growth in many men this year. As Jesus reached out to the sinners, so have I, and have witnessed amazing things.

We will continue to pray after the first service in the front of the sanctuary and encourage more of you to join us. We will be opening more men’s step study groups in Celebrate Recovery and pray that more of you will join us. We will discuss starting a men’s group with Pastor Lenny after he returns.

We will continue having the same ministry events and welcome suggestions if you have any.

Family Promise seeks to engage the community and individuals as well as businesses to end homelessness in Monroe County one family at a time.

Amazing Love

Are you amazed?

This month, as we celebrate Easter, we once again have the opportunity to remember a man hanging on the cross of Calvary. Let’s give thanks as we pray and ponder His value. Easter is a time to focus on the blood of Jesus being offered as the mighty and perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. Would you take the punishment for the crimes of others? He who was without sin took our sins upon Himself. He received the punishment we truly deserved, but were spared through God’s grace and mercy. It’s totally awesome how the Son of God was both willing and able to do that. This Easter, let's stop and think about that and be truly thankful as we accept His grace and peace.

This Easter, let's also stop and determine our significance and value as we open our hearts, raise our arms and fix our eyes upon our Savior. In this world we are often told, and sometimes feel, as if we are nothing, alone, and unlovable. And yet, when we remember the death of Jesus for us at Easter, we must hold our heads up high because His death for us is the ultimate and final proof that God loves us. If that doesn't give us true worth then nothing will. Whatever your situation is, you will never find anything more convincing than Jesus hanging on the cross to show you how loved and valuable you are to God.

We need to pray and study Scripture daily, worship often and develop a personal relationship with Christ to discover our purpose and our true worth. God's purpose for our lives may have not always been very clear. Sometimes we forget and base our worth on the world's standards instead of God's. There may be days when we feel like a total failure. When this happens, ask yourself if you have prayed or read the Bible today. We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world, trying to rely on God and make sense of it all as we go along. Our worth comes from God, not from anything or anyone on this earth.

In Christ Alone

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:25 (NIV)

Read 1 Corinthians 13

The Song of Solomon is a lyric poem meant to extol the virtues of love between a husband and his wife. The poem clearly presents marriage as God’s design. A man and woman are to live together within the context of marriage, loving each other spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

Key Verses: “Stir not up, nor awake love, till it please” (Song of Solomon 2:7; 3:5; 8:4).

“Eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved” (Song of Solomon 5:1).

“Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned” (Song of Solomon 8:6-7).

Practical Application: Our world is confused about marriage. The prevalence of divorce and modern attempts to redefine marriage stand in glaring contrast to Solomon’s Song. Marriage, says the biblical poet, is to be celebrated, enjoyed, and revered. This book provides some practical guidelines for strengthening our marriages:

1) Give your spouse the attention he or she needs. Take the time to truly know your spouse.

2) Encouragement and praise, not criticism, is vital to a successful relationship.

3) Enjoy each other. Plan some getaways. Be creative, even playful, with each other. Delight in God’s gift of married love.

4) Do whatever is necessary to reassure your commitment to your spouse. Renew your vows; work through problems and do not consider divorce as a solution. God intends for you both to live in a deeply peaceful, secure love.

Its not too late to sign-up for the Men’s Retreat at Spruce Lake Retreat, beginning the evening of January 17, 2008 and ending the following afternoon. The regular registration fee is $104.40. Many of you indicated you can not take off Friday. If you want to attend the Thursday evening dinner and session, the fee would only be $26.00. Contact Spruce Lake if you are interested in attending. Prayer and Fasting. An important part of Men’s Ministries is examining ourselves and our commitment to Christ. Much of this needs to be done at a personal level.We all need to pray and fast on a daily basis. Before you think I’m crazy and stop reading this, I am not suggesting we all need to starve ourselves or become malnourished. You may want to fast for one meal a week. If skipping a meal is not medically advisable, a spirit of fasting can include a restriction on luxuries in your life, such as doing without certain foods or drinks, watching television, shopping or going out to dinner. The purpose of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world and instead focus on Christ. We must constantly confess and repent from all sins.Fasting should be not only removing something from our lives, but replacing it with something that is pleasing to God. I suggest we examine ourselves, fast from something significant in our lives, and replace it with daily prayer, bible study and service to others that honors Christ.

Also, keep Pastor Tim, Karie and their children in your prayers for whatever life struggles they are facing.

Purpose in life

Purpose, meaning, a reason for living—these are all things we desire and search for in life. Despite steps each one of us takes to find purpose and meaning, we still feel empty, unfulfilled. That is because there is a spiritual emptiness in each of our lives. We each have a hole in our heart, a spiritual vacuum deep within our soul. Possessions won’t fill this hole, nor will success. Relationships alone cannot satisfy this emptiness, and morality, in and of itself, falls miserably short of occupying this space. In fact, even religion cannot fill the void in our heart.

There is only one way to effectively fill that void. This way will not only help us to have a life that is full and rich on this earth, but—more importantly—will give us the absolute hope of spending eternity in the presence of God. Before we can truly appreciate this good news, though, we need to understand the bad news, which is a serious problem we all have.

Mark Vincent will be the speaker for the retreat. Mark is the Congregational Advisor at Freeport (IL) Mennonite Church, a diverse congregation in the community living out of an Anabaptist perspective. He is also the lead partner of Design for Ministry, promoting the development of generous and sustainable congregations. Along with writing numerous books and articles, he has also been a key leader in The Giving Project, a first-fruits teaching effort of the Mennonite Church.

Steve Garrett will lead the music and worship. Steve’s original musical style sometimes draws comparisons to Steven Curtis Chapman or Dave Matthews. But ultimately it is his own unique flavor, lyrical and musical, of the grand themes of God’s grace, love and forgiveness, woven into a very accessible modern sound. He could be called am emerging pop rock artist, a worship leader and former youth pastor, but Steve simply prefers to be known as a man who worships Jesus Christ. “I want to use my artistic platform to lead people into powerful encounters with a living God,” Steve says. How does suffering help us be done with sin? (4:1)

The Reading:

When my son Steve was learning to play soccer, we spent time kicking the ball around the front yard. As I passed on the little I knew about the sport, he developed his own strategy. "I know how to get past my man," he told me. "When I'm dribbling the ball, I say, 'Hey, look over there!' When he does, I dribble past him!"

Steve's simple scheme resembles Satan's tactic. He's developed hundreds of ways to distract us into doing something other than serving or glorifying God. It can be an attractive person. She walks by, and we hear this whisper, "Hey, look over there." It can be an object, like a car or a boat. Again, we hear that little voice saying, "Psst, look at this!"

We need a strategy to counter Satan's diversions; [today's Key Bible Verse] identifies it. We look away from Jesus when lust or envy captures our attention, when we put our attention on others to criticize them. We look away when we let everyday concerns make us worry, when we neglect His Word.

Satan is the great distractor. Let's ignore his urgings and keep our eyes focused on Jesus. Then we'll find it easier to live for God's glory.

Congratulation to Pastor Tim for being ordained as a minister in the Wesleyan Church on September 30, 2007. It was an awesome service attended by many from SWC.

Our Men's Breakfast on September 29, 2007 was well attended. Over a dozen men gathered from a diverse group of ages. We thank you for your commitment to the men's ministries program! Also, we thank Dave Fernald for the excellent meal and leadership of the event. Special thanks to our special guest, Frank Major, for leading the devotional. Frank is a missionary from Bosnia visiting SWC for the weekend.

We had our Men's Ministry planning meeting on September 23, 2007 at noon. It was attended by 18 men of the church! As Christian Men, are we committed to making a difference in our:

Developing our personal relationship with Christ
Daily prayer time
Daily Bible reading
Attend Church regularly
Attend Growth Groups
Attend Men’s Ministry events
Education (Rounding the Bases)

We should consider asking another man to be our Prayer & Accountability Partner with whom we would contact on a daily basis to discuss any challenging issues in our lives and to pray together. It may be too impersonal to accomplish via Email, consider meeting or contact by telephone.

Establishing and writing down a time for prayer forms accountability.

A men's prayer group should be formed to pray during the worship service for all people in attendance. This could be done in the balcony above the church lobby. We should try to include senior men as well.

The importance of daily Bible reading was stressed. Memorizing scripture was also discussed with some different views. Some believe it is essential and we should develop methods to accomplish the memorization, such as flash cards, writing it down or computer aided programs. Others were concerned that their ability to memorize scripture was very challenging.

Developing a biblical fellowship time, to grow together

Men’s Breakfasts-This Saturday, 9/29/07 at 8:30 AM (will plan every other month)
Men’s Bible Study-Saturdays starting 10/6/07 at 11:30 AM followed by fellowship

We discussed the need for more than one Men's Bible Study due to their inability to attend the study scheduled Saturday mornings at 11:30 AM. It was explained that this time was picked since we may want to plan other sporting or community outreach events after the study. A suggestion was made to change the time to 8:30 AM. We will pray and evaluate this time. If anyone wants to lead a study at a different time, let us know. It was suggested that we establish a set time, such as 8:30 on Saturday for all activities.

We should be consistent, build and celebrate shorter term goals that that are successful.

It was also discussed that many men miss some of the events due to lack of multiple communications notifying and reminding them of the events. It seems that the preferred method to remind them is an Email several days before the event and another Email the day before the event. We also believe them men are more likely to sign up or attend events when they are personally invited and reminded.

An idea mentioned was a Boot Camp, Extreme Leadership, Team Building Confidence course type event for men.

A suggestion was made to design a golf shirt with embroidered logo and Proverbs 27:17 to create a team environment, attract interest and publicize us as a church.

Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12-step program based on the eight principles in the beatitudes to help us with our hurts, habits, and hang-ups. A hurt, habit, or hang-up is something that hinders our walk with God. All of us can benefit from this program.These life problems can be stumbling blocks or stepping stones. Healing is available through applying the principles of a Bible-based recovery process to our lives.

Men's Ministry Report - April 2007

The past year was our first year leading the Men’s Ministry program and has been a lot of fun and a tremendous learning experience.

The Monday Night Football events were a chance to gather and designed to reach out to your friends in a casual environment.

The Men’s Retreat at Spruce Lake was a great way to start the New Year. The program was spiritually uplifting. The free time allowed you to have time alone with God in a beautiful, serene setting. The evening in our private lodge was awesome. Seeing Pastor Lenny interact with Brad’s father Russel during the utter confusion of the “Mafia” game was priceless.

The March Men’s Encounter at Pinebrook was an awesome weekend opportunity for Men and teenage sons. The event was filled with sporting activities. Lieutenant Colonel Birdwell’s survival testimony was amazing. Seeing the teenagers’ faces light up as Irving Fryer spoke about agape love and how important Jesus is in our lives was fantastic.

Our meals ministry was and will be outstanding in cooperation with the Going team during the Brazilian Breakfast, the upcoming Mother’s Day Breakfast and the cookout at the upcoming yard sale.

Although some of our planned events may have been cancelled or not well attended, we cannot get discouraged. We think being determined, rather than discouraged, is a more appropriate reaction to last year.

First, we must prayerfully consider our future events. Then, carefully plan and promote them well in advance. We need a planning team with periodic meetings. We also encourage men to get involved and bring their ideas for new events.

We are hoping to have a Rafting trip sometime this Summer, which should include women and youth.

We should resume Men’s Breakfasts on a regular basis.

The Monday Night Football events should resume this Fall.

Hopefully we can bring back the Chili Cook-off next January.

We should plan on making The Men’s Retreat at Spruce Lake and the March Men’s Encounter at Pinebrook annual events along with the Promise Keepers Event.

In cooperation with our going team and youth team, We should consider a youth mentoring program and a prison ministry program.

Special thanks to Pastor Lenny for his continued support, David Fernald for leading the meals ministry, Alex Henriquez for organizing the Promise Keepers Events, Clarke Banta for assisting with the retreat at Spruce Lake, Errin Mulberry for making Pinebrook available for many events and all the men who supported, attended and will attend our events. Also, many thanks to Melanie Howard and Lynda Keefer for their help in getting our events into the church bulletin, email notices and Branches newsletters, sometimes with very little notice.
